A comparison of the trophic ecology of Beaufort Sea Gadidae using fatty acids and stable isotopes ArchiMer
Brewster, J. D.; Giraldo, Carolina; Choy, E. S.; Macphee, S. A.; Hoover, C.; Lynn, B.; Mcnicholl, D. G.; Majewski, A.; Rosenberg, B.; Power, M.; Reist, J. D.; Loseto, L. L..
Polar cod (Boreogadus saida) is one of the most studied Arctic marine fishes given its circumpolar distribution and centralised role in the Arctic marine food web. In contrast, relatively little is known about two other Arctic Gadidae: saffron cod (Eleginus gracilis) and Greenland cod (Gadus ogac). Climate change is expected to have an effect on sea ice-associated species, such as polar cod, but due to our lack of knowledge of other arctic gadid species it remains unclear how climate change will impact them and their interactions within the arctic marine ecosystem. Here, we explored the ecology of three Arctic Gadidae that co-occur in the Canadian Beaufort Sea. Stable isotope (SI) (niche overlap) and fatty acid (FA) (correspondence analysis and linear...

An evaluation of multi-annual management strategies for ICES roundfish stocks ArchiMer
Kell, L; Pilling, G; Kirkwood, G; Pastoors, M; Mesnil, Benoit; Korsbrekke, K; Abaunza, P; Aps, R; Biseau, Alain; Kunzlik, P; Needle, C; Roel, B; Ulrich, Clara.
Current scientific management objectives for ICES roundfish stocks are to ensure conservation of the biological resource and do not explicitly consider economic or social objectives. For example, there are currently no objectives to maximize the sustainable yield or to reduce variability in total allowable catches (TACs). This is despite the fact that the current system can result in wide annual fluctuations in TAC, limiting the ability of the fishing industry to plan for the future. Therefore, this study evaluated management strategies that stabilized catches by setting bounds on the interannual variability in TACs. An integrated modelling framework was used, which simulated both the real and observed systems and the interactions between system...

Changes in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) sperm quality during the spawning season ArchiMer
Rouxel, Catherine; Suquet, Marc; Cosson, J; Severe, Armelle; Quemener, Loic; Fauvel, Christian.
The biology of cod reproduction is well described in the scientific literature. However, sperm biology and spermatozoa management are poorly studied in this species. Because of its recent farming expansion, a better knowledge of cod gametes is becoming especially useful. This work aimed at establishing tools to study sperm biology in cod, and also investigated the existence of changes in cod sperm quality during the spawning period. We showed that sperm concentration could be assessed using spectrophotometry at 260 nm. Sperm motility significantly decreased after a 168-h storage at 4 degrees C. A 1:9 dilution of sperm in a non-activating medium (1/3 seawater and 2/3 freshwater, osmotic pressure: 360 mOsm kg(-1)) improved sperm storage. Sperm concentration,...

Cod (Gadus morhua) Migrations in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Areas South of Newfoundland ArchiMer
Moguedet, Philippe.
During the years 1975, 1976, 1980 and 1982 cod (Gadus morhua) tagging experiments were conducted, inside the Gulf of St. Lawrence and outside in areas south of Newfoundland, by French scientists from IFREMER St. Pierre and Miquelon laboratory, in order to study the population distribution and migration and to complement the experiments carried out by Canadian scientists. The analysis from all recoveries and results from these experiments are presented here. The relevance is that the comparison with the Canadian results would lead to a better understanding of the cod stock exchanges in the area. The migratory patterns were believed to be mainly a response to seasonal environmental condition changes. In winter the cod were noted to migrate from the central...

Comparison of dietary phospholipids and neutral lipids: effects on gut, liver and pancreas histology in Atlantic cod (Gadus morha L.) larvae ArchiMer
Wold, P. -a.; Hoehne-reitan, K.; Cahu, Chantal; Zambonino, Jose-luis; Rainuzzo, J.; Kjorsvik, E..
The aim of the present study was to compare effects of dietary n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) being incorporated in the phospholipid (PL) or in the neutral lipid (NL) fraction of the larval feed, on larval growth and histology of digestive organs in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) larvae. Three isoproteic and isolipidic diets, labelled according to the percentage of n-3 docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid contained in NL1 or in PL1 and PL3 of the diets, were fed to cod larvae from 17 days post hatching (dph) to 45 dph. In the liver, hepatocytes and their nuclei were smaller in NL1 larvae compared with the PL larvae; the mitochondrial membrane structures were less dense and the amount of lipids observed in the liver was significantly...

Comparison of dietary phospholipids and neutral lipids on skeletal development and fatty acid composition in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) ArchiMer
Kjorsvik, Elin; Olsen, Cecilia; Wold, Per-arvid; Hoehne-reitan, Katja; Cahu, Chantal; Rainuzzo, Jose; Olsen, Atle Ivar; Oie, Gunvor; Olsen, Yngvar.
Dietary essential fatty acids may affect larval skeletal formation. The aim of this study was to compare effects on growth and osteological development of dietary docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) being incorporated in the phospholipid (diets PL1 and PL3) or in the neutral lipid (diet NL1) fraction of the larval diet for Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua). The diets were labelled according to the estimated percentage of total n-3 fatty acids contained in the dietary neutral lipid (NL1-1.3% of dietary dry matter) or in the phospholipid fraction (PL1-1.1% and PL3-2.3%). Larvae were weaned to the isoenergetic and isolipiclic microdiets from 17 days post hatching (dph). They were co-fed enriched rotifers until 24 dph and received thereafter...

Etude d'une gestion optimale des pecheries de langoustines et de poissons demersaux en mer Celtique ArchiMer
Laurec, Alain; Charuau, Anatole; Perodou, Jean-bernard; Nedelec, Daniel; Biseau, Alain; Durand, Jean-louis; Rivoalen, Jean-jacques; Dupouy, Herve; Le Louarn, G.; Leroux, L..
The general study, scheduled from 1984 to 1986, aims at providing a judgement about the fisheries in the Celtic Sea. This area has been chosen because it is frequented by EEC vessels with, for the time being, a large majority of French vessels. Activities there are easier to monitor than anywhere else as coastal fisheries are little developed in the area. The final product will consist of a certain number of hypotheses about the planning strategies that could be implemented in the Celtic Sea. The main idea is, firstly, to conduct analytical studies, stock by stock, in order then, to synthesize them into a model integrating the interactions between fleets in relation to their target species. A bio-economical model, deriving from the latter, will enable the...

Experimental ecology: A key to understanding fish biology in the wild ArchiMer
Suquet, Marc; Rochet, Marie-joelle; Gaignon, Jean-louis.
Because of natural complexity, field studies are often inconclusive with regards to the ultimate cause of a given change observed in wild animal populations. As a consequence, there is scope to develop an Experimental Ecology Approach (EEA). In this paper, we favour the use of experimental ecology studies to evaluate the effects of environmental factors on fish biology. We identify the advantages of EEA: disentangling the effects of several factors and identifying their respective roles, generating artificial scenarios and increasing our capability to collect and analyse data. This study emphasises the constraints of this approach: fish biological performances may be altered by rearing conditions, by domestication and by the prevention of some behaviours....

Exploring habitat credits to manage the benthic impact in a mixed fishery ArchiMer
Batsleer, J.; Marchal, Paul; Vaz, Sandrine; Vermard, Youen; Rijnsdorp, A. D.; Poos, J. J..
The performance of a combined catch quota and habitat credit system was explored to manage the sustainable exploitation of a mix of demersal fish species and reduce the benthic impacts of bottom trawl fisheries using a dynamic state variable model approach. The model was parameterised for the Eastern English Channel demersal mixed fishery using otter trawls or dredges. Target species differed in their association with habitat types. Restricting catch quota for plaice and cod had a limited effect on benthic impact, except when reduced to very low values, forcing the vessels to stay in port. Quota management had a minimal influence on fishing behaviour and hence resulted in a minimal reduction of benthic impact. Habitat credits may reduce the benthic impacts...

Impacts of climate change on the complex life cycles of fish ArchiMer
Petitgas, Pierre; Rijnsdorp, Adriaan D.; Dickey-collas, Mark; Engelhard, Georg H.; Peck, Myron A.; Pinnegar, John; Drinkwater, Kenneth F.; Huret, Martin; Nash, Richard.
To anticipate the response of fish populations to climate change, we developed a framework that integrates requirements in all life stages to assess impacts across the entire life cycle. The framework was applied on plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) and Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) in the North Sea, Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) in the Norwegian/Barents Seas and European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) in the Bay of Biscay. In each case study, we reviewed habitats required by each life stage, habitat availability, and connectivity between habitats. We then explored how these could be altered by climate change. We documented environmental processes impacting habitat availability and connectivity, providing an integrated view at the population level and in...

Mixed fisheries management: protecting the weakest link ArchiMer
Batsleer, Jurgen; Poos, J. J.; Marchal, Paul; Vermard, Youen; Rijnsdorp, A. D..
North Sea cod Gadus morhua stock is outside safe biological limits, and total allowable catch (TAC) management has proved ineffective to rebuild the stock. The European Commission is considering the imposition of a discard ban to preserve vulnerable and economically important fish stocks. We explored the potential effects of a discard ban in mixed fisheries management using the French mixed fisheries in the Eastern English Channel as a model system. We examined in particular the performance of 2 different management scenarios: (1) individual quota management with a tolerance for discarding and (2) individual quota management in combination with a discard ban, using a dynamic state variable model. The model evaluates a time series of decisions taken by...

Motility characteristics of spermatozoa in cod (Gadus morhua) and hake (Merluccius merluccius) ArchiMer
Cosson, Jacky; Groison, Anne-laure; Suquet, Marc; Fauvel, Christian.
As in many marine fish, motility is triggered by osmotic pressure (OP) in cod and hake spermatozoa and motility ranges several minutes with a high velocity (above 50 mu m/s) period restricted to 100 s. A decrease in the flagellar beat frequency (BF) is partly responsible of this briefness. Detailed observations of the flagella during the motility period showed: 1) sea water provokes OP damages (blebs) which impair the correct wave propagation 2) waves become restricted to the proximal flagellum and tip becomes devoid of wave 3) the wave amplitude decreases. The combination of these factors drastically limits to the earliest period of motility the ability for spermatozoa to efficiently progress towards egg for fertilization.

New insights into behavioural ecology of European seabass off the West Coast of France: implications at local and population scales ArchiMer
De Pontual, Helene; Lalire, Maxime; Fablet, Ronan; Laspougeas, Claire; Garren, Francois; Martin, Stephane; Drogou, Mickael; Woillez, Mathieu.
From 2010 to 2012, 246 data storage tags were deployed on European seabass in the Iroise Natural Marine Park, a marine protected area (MPA) off west Brittany, France. A return rate of 14.6% associated with long time series of data provided new information on fish ecology (e.g. maximum experienced depth greater than 225 m, temperature range 6.80–21.87°C). Depth and temperature series were used to infer individual migration using an innovative hidden Markov model (HMM) especially developed for seabass geolocation. Reconstructed fish tracks revealed that seabass is a partially migratory species, as individuals exhibited either long-distance migrations towards the Bay of Biscay or the Celtic Sea, or residency behaviour in the Iroise Sea. Fidelity to summer...

Pêcheries bigoudenes. Bilan des connaissances Activités de pêche, Ressources, Gestion ArchiMer
Biseau, Alain; Maguer, Cedric; Sanz Aparicio, Céline.
Located at the far south-west of Brittany, the pays bigouden is the first of the French maritime regions in terms of landed value and the second one in weights. The bigouden fishing practices are characterised by a large diversity of target species and métiers. Studying the fishing practises leads to a description of the various métiers and fishing strategies together with their trends over the last ten years. Identification of métiers is based on multifactors analysis. Using a classification method based on thresholds of species landings then allows a more objective analysis and leads to a more quantitative characterisation of the trawl métiers, which represent more than 80% of the total fishing activity of this region. Two métiers are based on Nephrops...

Purification and characterisation of trypsin-like enzyme from the pyloric caeca of cod (Gadus morhua) II BABT
Beirão,Luiz Henrique; Mackie,Ian Mckintoch; Teixeira,Evanilda; Damian,César.
A trypsin -like enzyme from the pyloric caeca of cod (Gadus morhua) was purified by affinity chromatography on CHOM Sepharose 4B. Some characteristics were established by its catalytic activity on T.A.M.E., typical enzyme substrate, and serine protease inhibitors. The enzyme had an isoelectric point of 5.30 and 5.89 and was very similar in amino acid composition to bovine trypsin, but differed in having a higher relative amount of acidic amino acids and a lower amount of basic amino acids. The enzyme also hydrolysed fish protein substrates.

Selection method of new candidates for finfish aquaculture: the case of the French Atlantic, the Channel and the North Sea coasts ArchiMer
Quemener, Loic; Suquet, Marc; Mero, David; Gaignon, Jean-louis.
At present, European marine fish farming is based on sea bream and sea bass. A trend for diversification is sustained by the diversity of environmental conditions, by the availability of new production techniques such as recirculating systems, by an increase in rearing yields, by new market trends and by the possibilities to reduce risks of disease outbreak. Already reared fish species were chosen considering a limited number of criteria such as a high selling price and the availability of juveniles or breeders in the wild. This paper proposes a new selection method of fish species as candidates for aquaculture development on the French Atlantic, the Channel and the North Sea coasts. Using a three-phase procedure, candidates were selected among 20 000 fish...

Self-sampling of cod in the Celtic Sea ArchiMer
Bellail, Robert; Peronnet, Isabelle; Rochet, Marie-joelle; Lamothe, Julien.
Since 2003, the application of restrictive TAC for cod in area VIIb-k has led some French Professional Organisations to manage their restrictive quota by imitations of landings by trip or period or by prohibiting the landings of the smallest commercial category. In consequence of that, le level of discarding has increased by high grading practice. In the lack of available and reliable data to estimate the level of discarding and the amount of discarded fish, the assessment of Celtic Sea Cod in Divisions VIIe-k has been in recent years more and more uncertain, especially in estimating younger year classes, for a fishery which can be qualified as a recruitment fishery. On a Professional Organisation (PMA= Pêcheries Manche-Atlantique) initiative and in the...
